Many view Tarot as a tool of prediction or fortune-telling, but its true magic lies in its role as a visual map of the human psyche. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung noted that certain symbolic patterns and images recur across all human cultures. He termed these shared images archetypes, which reside in the collective unconscious.
The Major Arcana as The Hero's Journey
The 22 cards of the Major Arcana represent the universal stages of human psychological development. This sequence is often referred to as "The Fool's Journey." The Fool (numbered 0) represents the raw, unconditioned soul at the beginning of life, ready to take a leap into the physical world.
As The Fool travels through the sequence, they encounter various archetypal figures:
- The Magician: Represents conscious willpower, action, and the manifestation of thoughts.
- The High Priestess: Represents the intuitive, receptive subconscious mind and hidden mysteries.
- The Emperor: Represents structure, boundaries, law, and fatherly authority.
- The Hermit: Represents isolation, introspection, wisdom, and inner light.
- The Tower: Represents sudden collapse of outdated beliefs and ego structures.
By interacting with these cards during a reading, we project our current conflicts onto these timeless archetypes, allowing our subconscious mind to deliver solutions that our analytical brain might have missed.
